If you’ve ever found yourself blanking when someone mentions The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, or any other movie that's achieved cult status, you’re not alone — and you’re in the right place! Here at Film School 4 Dummies, we’re a podcast run by people who, well, don’t know much about cult classics, or any other movie. But hey, that’s the fun of it! We’re on a journey to figure out why these movies have such a devoted following and what we've been missing out on.

Why Cult Classics Matter

Cult classics are more than just old movies — they’re experiences. From midnight showings to loyal fan followings, these films have created lasting impact on audiences across generations. But we’re here to admit: if you’ve avoided these films because you don’t know where to start or worry they might feel dated, we’re right there with you.

The “Film School 4 Dummies” Guide to Watching Cult Classics

Here’s how we approach each movie, and if you’re new to cult classics, it might just work for you, too:

  1. Step One: Know Nothing

    1. We go into each movie without Googling or reading reviews beforehand. There’s something liberating about starting fresh, without spoilers or other people’s opinions.

  2. Step Two: Bring on the Expert

    1. On our podcast, we always have a guest who knows their stuff — a film critic, historian, or just a die-hard fan. They help us see what makes each film resonate and sometimes provide much-needed context for things we might otherwise miss.

  3. Step Three: Embrace the Weird

    1. Cult classics often have their own vibe. Whether it’s a quirky plot or a bizarre character, embracing the unexpected is half the fun. Instead of questioning, we lean in and see where the film takes us.

  4. Step Four: Reflect and Discuss

    1. After watching, we take time to talk it out — what worked, what didn’t, and why we think people still love it today. Having someone to discuss it with can turn even the strangest film into a shared adventure.

Our Cult Classic Wishlist

Here are some iconic movies on our “to-watch” list that we have tackled so far. Check them out if you’re curious to join us on the ride!

  • Interstellar

  • When Harry Met Sally

  • Halloween

  • Fight Club

  • The Exorcism
